Learning outcomes
Aesthetics The course aims to provide the conceptual, methodological and cultural foundations for analyzing and interpreting aesthetic problems in the strict sense (sensitive perception and knowledge) and works of art in a broader sense. In this sense specific knowledge is transmitted (interpretative theories and artistic practices within the context of history of Western aesthetical reflection) which, subsequently, are applied to specific problems (perception in general and to particular works). The course aims to make people understand the conceptual logics and structures, through which aesthetical experience lets us comprehend the world we live, and transform it. At the end of course, students will develop the ability to comprehend a philosophical text, to correctly approach it from a hermeneutical perspective, and to use a precise and adequate language; moreover, it aims at allowing the student to acquire the competences to confront himself with the sensitive perception and with the artistic world so as to be able to independently form a critical judgment. Finally, students will have the capacity to communicate philosophical contents to specialists and non-specialists alike, and to continue their studies at a higher level.
Program
Syllabus:
The first part of the course deals with different relationships between mimesis and ratio focalizing on some of the fundamental passages in history (Plato, Aristotle, Descartes, Rationalism, Empirism, Baumgarten). Furthermore, even fundamental concepts of contemporary aesthetics, such as the sublime and the genius in their Kantian and Goethean form, will be examined. This first part will conclude with the exposition of Hegel's aesthetics.
According to many scholars, the encounter between Nietzsche and Wagner constitutes one of the fundamental moments for understanding European spiritual history of the last two centuries. The course aims to analyse Nietzsche’s philosophical production in the period of his teaching in Basel and his frequentation with Richard Wagner. It will be a question of understanding the meaning of the Nietzschean philosophical proposal, measuring the enduring validity of some theoretical connections – also for contemporaneity. It will be necessary to fully understand the new philosophical evaluation of the tragic, its connection with Greek philosophy / literature and with Wagner’s work, the articulation threshold between philology and philosophy, the translation and historical problem connected with the theoretical relationships between archaic Greece and modern Germany, the meaning of history and the sense of human formation in the light of the philosopher’s texts. An exploration will be proposed through Nietzsche’s twentieth-century philosophical reception, right into the twenty-first century.
No prior knowledge and skills are deemed necessary.Literature:

DIDACTIC MODES
The didactic methods adopted are not distinct between attending and non-attending students. They consist of frontal lessons devoted to the transmission of fundamental concepts and structures of thinking and reflection and their respective application tools to implement theoretical notions in the direction of autonomous critical judgment.
Throughout the academic year, the teachers also hold a regular individual Reception at the times indicated on their pages (without having to set a specific appointment). However, it is recommended that you consult the messages to be informed of any changes. During the first lesson, attending students will receive the full lesson schedule with the dates and topics discussed. Information on timetables and classrooms is also provided.
The content of books and lessons is adhering to the program.

Examination Methods
ASSESSMENT METHODS AND CRITERIA
Due to the Coronavirus pandemic, and in accordance with the University of Verona guidelines, during the 2020 summer session the assessment modality will be modified as follows: online oral exam.
The assessment of the learning outcomes involves an oral test, during which the issues discussed during the course and studied in the texts will be developed. The exam aims at ensuring knowledge of the topics under discussion and the ability to apply the concepts and logical methodologies to the various issues proposed.
This indivisible oral test is about the whole program and consists of a two-part interview - one with the teacher and one with one of his collaborators - and tries to verify:
- the depth and breadth of the knowledge gained;
- the property of language;
- the ability to systematically connect knowledge;
- analytical and argumentative ability.
The vote is expressed in marks from 18 to 30/30.
ERASMUS students are requested to contact the teacher at the beginning of the courses to agree together the teaching methods and the assessment tests.
