Learning outcomes
The main aim is to introduce the themes of textual syntax from the point of view of theoretical linguistics and pragmatics (cohesion and coherence of the text, anaphora, deixis, information structure). We start from more general considerations on the concept of language and on the centrality that the reflection on language has being having - and continues to have - in the contemporary cultural debate. Through online tests appropriately distributed and corrected during class some linguistic themes useful for the training of the teacher's cultural and professional figure will be reinforced. EXPECTED FORMATIVE RESULTS The course aims to provide students with a critical thinking about the fundamental concepts and methods of linguistics for the cultural and professional enrichment of the humanistic intellectual. At the end of the course the student must be able to: • describe the basics of language study; • recognize the fundamentals of the syntax of the text and of the information structure • know how to apply the acquired knowledge in the future study career.
Program
§§ 2020-2021 program: Textuality, Technologies, Theories
(1) Introduction to text linguistics
(2) Monographic part: Textuality, Technologies, Theories
(3) Teamwork: Lexicon and linguistic variety (consolidation)
(-) Supplementary seminars: to be defined (meetings with guest teachers planned)
§ Articulation of the course
(1) ‘Textus’ (approx. 12-14 hours)
- Introduction. Word and text, sentence and utterance.
- Semantics: meaning, denotation and ‘textual referents’.
- Syntax and text: deixis and anaphora.
- Information structure and semiotics of the text (outline).
(2) Monographic (approx. 14-16 hours)

- Language, textuality and interaction.
- The functions of language in mediated and technological interaction.

Supplementary seminar planned.
(3) Teamwork (consolidating knowledge, approx. 6-8 hours)
- Spelling and morphological analysis (exercises).
- The concept of mental lexicon and layering of the lexicon (with classroom work).
- Repertoires and varieties (ouline).
§ Didactic modalities
The various topics will be treated within single comprehensive thematic design (not in separate blocks), through:
(I) lectures with questions and discussions in order to encourage the active intervention of the participants, and possibly urging students to identify topics to be developed independently and presented to colleagues in the classroom (according to the regulations in force, the teaching will be adapted to the conditions, maintaining the principle of the student’s active involvement);
(II) exercises and tests online or in the classroom (depending on the possibilities and regulations in force) mainly for the scope of consolidating basic knowledge;
(III) any additional seminars with the participation of guests.
***NB: considering the current situation of epidemic risk, the teaching will be carried out with lessons in the classroom (if safety conditions permit), in any case integrated with the moodle platform and streaming and video-conferencing technologies.***

Examination Methods
§§ Examination arrangements.
There are three examination procedures: ongoing teamwork (‘in itinere’); presentation or paper; interview. All students are required to prepare for the final interview, unless otherwise agreed. Papers or presentations can be used to complete (a) part of the examination requests.
The exam verifies the knowledge acquired, the ability to apply it, critical awareness, the property of expression, independence in the study.
More specifically, the evaluation will take into account the following.
1- (a) Fundamental notions of the syntax of the text and of the structure of information, mainly with discursive questions during the examination interview. (b) Insights relating to the glottological-linguistic discipline, with reference to the monographic part, by means of a presentation, a paper or the interview (choice of the student, motivated to the teacher).
2- (a) Ability to link together and rework the proposed themes. (b) Application of the basics of linguistics, for a consolidation of basic knowledge, assessed with group or individual work ‘in itinere’.
3- Critical thinking: attention to argumentation and critical reflections.
4- Communicative appropriateness: relevance and promptness of the answers.
5- Independence in finding and comparing any additional sources for the study.
Given the complexity of the subject and the articulation of the teaching, priority will be given to the evaluation of points 1, 2, and 4.
§ Information for * exam preparation *
They're in demand:
- Rizza, A. (ed.) And AaVv., Notes and general glottology materials related to the monographic part provided and collected in class (see moodle page).
- A choice of reading (agreed with the teacher), to be presented, depending on the possibilities, during the course, or at the exam, in oral or written form (chosen by the student, after consultation with the teacher).
- Andorno, C., Linguistica testuale. Un’introduzione. Carocci, capp. 1-3 (unless otherwise agreed).
- During the course students will be asked to do a short group work to compare basic knowledge.
§ Bibliography of help (not compulsory) and useful *to refresh* the basics
- Schwarz-Friesel, M. - Consten, M., Einführung in die Textlinguistik. Darmstadt: WBG (Wiss. Buchges.) 2014.

(a) Students will be invited to prepare a presentation by choosing one or more of the proposed themes. It is understood that during the interview questions may be asked on any topic that emerged during lesson.
(b) All students, both attending and not attending, are invited to prepare an individual choice reading. The teacher is available to arrange a reading suited to the interests of individual students.
§ Possibility of written modalities
Students can prepare a written paper (about 5000 words) for a part of the program using notes and materials made available during the lessons or found independently (in agreement with the teacher).
N.B .: the written paper must be delivered approx. one week before the exam session, to allow reading and possible required improvement before the final evaluation.

Double Degree
The University of Verona, through a network of agreements with foreign universities, offers international courses that enable students to gain a Double/Joint degree at the time of graduation. Indeed, students enrolled in a Double/Joint degree programme will be able to obtain both the degree of the University of Verona and the degree issued by the Partner University abroad - where they are expected to attend part of the programme -, in the time it normally takes to gain a common Master’s degree. The institutions concerned shall ensure that both degrees are recognised in the two countries.
Places on these programmes are limited, and admissions and any applicable grants are subject to applicants being selected in a specific Call for applications.
The latest Call for applications for Double/Joint Degrees at the University of Verona is available now!
