Learning outcomes

The overall objective is to provide students with an overview of the specificity of firm types prevailing in different wine business segments. Segments follow the added value pathway, from grape production at the vineyard level, to marketing and delivery of the final product to consumers and resellers, divided by market segment values across markets intermediaries and various form of sales (from on-site vineyard sale to internet catalogue). The students should be able to understand the specificity of firm structure across segments, geographical districts and producing countries, inclusive of the institutional motivations as to why firms types have developed their specificity and what forces have contributed to the shaping of such specificity. Particular emphasis is placed on governance and management structure, cooperative firms, family holdings, international operators and multinational in the alcohol sector. Several case studies will be studied to exemplify the salient traits of different wine market segments and their realities. Students will actively participate in the development of the topics covered with group work, presentations on specific themes and reports.

Examination Methods

Students will be evaluated on the basis of their participation in class during group works taking place during the course, as well as in a final exam (written and possibly oral) based on the topics covered in the class teachings.

Double degree

The University of Verona, through a network of agreements with foreign universities, offers international courses that enable students to gain a Double/Joint degree at the time of graduation. Indeed, students enrolled in a Double/Joint degree programme will be able to obtain both the degree of the University of Verona and the degree issued by the Partner University abroad - where they are expected to attend part of the programme -, in the time it normally takes to gain a common Master’s degree. The institutions concerned shall ensure that both degrees are recognised in the two countries.

Places on these programmes are limited, and admissions and any applicable grants are subject to applicants being selected in a specific Call for applications.
