Program
The course aims to provide students with an overview of the complex organizational structure that makes up the system of management and protection of the Italian artistic and cultural heritage.
During the first part, the various aspects linked to the museum context will be analysed, starting from the meaning of "cultural heritage" and the birth and evolution of the term "museum" to arrive at the definition coined by ICOM and adopted by the Code of Cultural Heritage and Landscape. We will briefly retrace the origins of the different types of Italian museums, highlighting the differences in the formation of collections and their management, and we will evaluate the tasks, legal and institutional duties and marketing strategies adopted by museums.
We’ll explore the various professional figures who work within museums, and we’ll analyse which training courses are necessary to access the national list of professionals created by Mibac with Ministerial Order D.M. 244, 20th May 2019.
The second part of the course will be dedicated to the fundamental role played by private foundations and bank foundations, which have become legal entities and tools for managing cultural heritage with specificities, which often operate in synergy with the public sector.
Finally, a focus will be dedicated to the theme of temporary exhibitions, cultural initiatives which perform a priority function in the advancement of studies and the diffusion of knowledge. They’ve got a strategic importance in the short and long-term planning of each "cultural company". The student will be able to discover how an exhibition is constructed, from the idea to its practical realization, and which professionals work behind the scenes, from the curator to the registrar.
In addition to the bibliographic material (the definitive bibliography will be confirmed at the beginning of the course), the power point slides shown during the lessons and any PDFs or in-depth texts commented during the lessons will be provided. These materials will be uploaded to the teaching Moodle page.
Bibliography
Didactic methods
Lessons will take place in the classroom with the aid of PowerPoint projections. 6 hours of teaching (1 credit) will be held remotely in a synchronous manner and the opportunity will be taken to invite experts from the museum sector and thus be able to delve deeper into some of the topics addressed during the lessons held in person.
Learning assessment procedures
Oral interview with questions relating to the program carried out.
Evaluation criteria
In addition to knowledge of the topics covered, the final evaluation will also be influenced by exposition skills, the use of appropriate terminology, the ability to contextualize information and to critically rework the texts proposed in the bibliography. The program and exam methods will not present differences between attending and non-attending students. Erasmus Students are invited to contact the professors to arrange examination arrangements.
