Academic calendar
The academic calendar shows the deadlines and scheduled events that are relevant to students, teaching and technical-administrative staff of the University. Learning outcomes
The educational objectives of the teaching are the acquisition of historical-artistic skills, methodological tools and critical, technical and interpretative terminologies relating to the development of art history from the end of the eighteenth century to contemporary art.
The student must also acquire specific terminology and general knowledge of critical sources and the development of the history of art criticism and methodologies related to the analysis of contemporary art.
Program
The program starts from the poetics of classicism and the Sublime of the second half of the eighteenth century to arrive at the artistic events of the last few years.
Topics:
Eighteenth-century classicism (sources, archaeological excavations, the personalities of Piranesi, Ledoux, Boullé, Mengs and Canova, David, the Napoleonic patronage)
Sublime and Picturesque (sources; Fuessli, Friedrich, Constable, Turner, Blake)
Proto-romanticism (Goya, Gros, Gericault, Nazareni)
Historical Romanticism (sources; Delacroix, Hayez, Bartolini's purism, eclectic architecture, Violett Le Duc)
The naturalistic current (Corot, the Barbizon school, the Posillipo school, Courbet, Manet, the Impressionist group, Cézanne, Tuscan Macchiaioli, Scapigliatura)
Post-impressionism (Seurat, Signac, Cross, the Pont Aven group, Gauguin and Van Gogh, the Italian divisionists)
European symbolism (see monographic program)
The sculpture between naturalism and symbolism (Rodin, Vela, Troubetskoy, Grandi, Medardo Rosso)
International modernism and the various national variations

Examination Methods
The exam consists of an oral interview on the works, on the artistic personalities and on the various problems, also theoretical, of the stroia of contemporary art
Due to the Coronavirus pandemic, and in accordance with the University of Verona guidelines, during the 2020 summer session the assessment modality will be modified as follows: online oral exam.
