Learning outcomes
The course aims to deepen the study of medieval Latin literature with particular attention to a specific literary genre, by directly analyzing the work of one or more authors particularly representative of that specific genre. Lessons will focus on the linguistic and stylistic analysis, as well on readings of the chosen texts, also considering philological aspects and using the usual tools of literary hermeneutics (metrical analysis, study of the figures of style, as well as narratology and history of the interpretation), with the aid of methodological approaches aimed at developing adequate analytical and argumentative skills.
Program
(1) Hagiography and hagiology: sources, methods and tools of historical research on Christian holiness and the cult of saints.
(2) Hagiographic genres in Latin literature from late antiquity to Dante’s time: selected readings of more representative authors and texts (Sulpicius Severus, Gregory of Tours, Venantius Fortunatus, Gregory the Great, Peter Damian, Iacobus de Varagine, Thomas of Celano).
(3) Dante as hagiographer: saints in the «Comedy».
Bibliography and other learning resources:
(1) Notes from lessons; C. Leonardi, «Agiografia», in «Lo spazio letterario del Medioevo latino» I/2, Salerno, Roma 1993, pp. 421-462 (ora anche in Id., «Agiografie medievali», a cura di A. Degl’Innocenti e F. Santi, SISMEL - Edizioni del Galluzzo, Firenze 2011, pp. 31-72).

Double Degree
The University of Verona, through a network of agreements with foreign universities, offers international courses that enable students to gain a Double/Joint degree at the time of graduation. Indeed, students enrolled in a Double/Joint degree programme will be able to obtain both the degree of the University of Verona and the degree issued by the Partner University abroad - where they are expected to attend part of the programme -, in the time it normally takes to gain a common Master’s degree. The institutions concerned shall ensure that both degrees are recognised in the two countries.
Places on these programmes are limited, and admissions and any applicable grants are subject to applicants being selected in a specific Call for applications.
The latest Call for applications for Double/Joint Degrees at the University of Verona is available now!
