Learning outcomes
The course aims at providing examples of the contribution contemporary philosophy has made to the understanding of the functioning of language, of the relation between language, material reality and social reality. At the end of the course, students will have to prove that they accurately know the subjects of the program, are able to expose them in a consequential and concise way, have acquired an independent judgement.
Program
Course title:
The Leviathan and the Good Shepherd: Language, Power, and Subjectivity In Michel Foucault and Thomas Hobbes
Michel Foucault, one of the most influential thinkers of the XXth Century, has changed our way of doing philosophy. He was a multifaceted intellectual whose interests ranged from history and literary criticism to epistemology and political philosophy. All his work is traversed by a reflection on the relation between language, reality and subjectivity.
The course will analyze Foucault's archeological epistemology and his genealogical critique of the concept of sovereignty. This concept will be explained through Thomas Hobbes' thought, where a conventionalist theory of language serves as a premise to the justification of State sovereignty.
Methods:
Lectures based on reading and interpretation of the texts and discussions.
