Learning outcomes
The course of Foundamental of Environmental biotechnology provides basic and advanced knowledge of biological processes involved in wastewater treatment. During the course the main parameters affecting the removal efficiencies and the yields of the main biological, chemical and physical process will be evaluated. The course also provides groundwork regarding biotechnological industrial processes and bio-refineries for the treatment and valorization of different type of biomass into biofuel and high added value products (biopolymers, fertilizers, etc.) from such as, sewage sludge and agricultural residues. The laboratory practices will provide knowledge of:
- Characterization of liquid and solid waste matrices through basic chemical-physical analysis and ;
- Monitoring of bioprocesses and mass balances.
Program
Theory lessons:
•Mass balance of environmental bioprocesses, calculation of yields and efficiencies;
• Enzyme kinetics, Michaelis Menten equation, Inhibition, Microbial Growth and Monod Equation,
• Goundwork of environmental bioreactors for bio-refineries application, numerical exercises of real case studies;
• Biological oxidation, nitrification, denitrification, biological phosphorus removal, etc.), energy recovery through anaerobic digestion.
• Graphic representation of an environmental chemical/bioprocess, use of simulators (software) for modeling and testing of environmental bioreactors.
Practice lessons:
Examination Methods
Attending or non-attending candidates must attend the final exam consisting of a written test followed by an oral test.
The written test consists of 2 numerical exercises and a question related to the theoretical part of the lesson. The written test will be evaluated with a maximum score of 25/30.
The oral test as a topic of discussion is the candidate's report on practical laboratory experience. The rating will have a maximum score of 5/30.
The final outcome will be the sum of the scores obtained from the written test and oral test.

Attendance
As stated in the Teaching Regulations for the A.Y. 2022/2023, attendance is not mandatory. However, professors may require students to attend lectures for a minimum of hours in order to be able to take the module exam, in which case the methods that will be used to check attendance will be explained at the beginning of the module.
