Legend | Type of training activity (TTA)
TAF (Type of Educational Activity) All courses and activities are classified into different types of educational activities, indicated by a letter.
Type D and Type F activities
3. Competenze trasversali
Solo in seguito all'ottenimento dell'Open Badge verranno automaticamente convalidati i CFU a libretto.

Learning objectives
Learning Objectives
The course aims to provide a shared cultural foundation of the unifying concepts of Earth Sciences.
Knowledge
Concepts expounded in the course will allow students to:
- understand the history and evolution of planet Earth; the evolution of Earth processes and the underlying endogenous and exogenous dynamics; the formation of landforms and landscapes;
- provide the tools for the assessment of geological and geomorphological hazards; understand the scope of Earth Sciences in environmental science;
- understand the purpose of geological classifications; understand how fossils provide information about environment changes and the evolution of species in geologic time;
- identify the main rock types and their originating processes.
Abilities
- identification of the most common types of minerals and rocks, along with the originating geological processes;
- identification of the most common fossils, especially those that are found in the Veronese area;
- identification of the main geomorphological features of the territory;
- reading a geological and/or geomorphological map and extracting basic information.
Prerequisites and basic notions
No prerequisite.
Program
Topics we will cover:
- fields and objectives of the Earth Sciences;
- elements of solid Earth geophysics (what does the Earth generally work?);
- mineralogy: origin and classification of minerals (what is the Earth made of?);
- petrography: origin and classification of rocks (what is the Earth made of?);
- sedimentology: origin and deposition of sediments, sedimentary environments (what are sediments, how and where do they form?)
- stratigraphy: general principles and examples in the Veronese territory (how do sedimentary rocks form and what do they tell us?)
- palaeontology: basic principles, evolution, classification of the most common and most significant fossils, history of life in the geological past (how did life evolve?)
- geomorphology: overview and examples in the Italian and Veronese territory (how are landscapes formed?)
- applied geology: rocks and fossils in the stones of Verona
- speleology, karst and karst hydrology (where does the water we drink come from?)
- geological risk analysis (what are the geological dangers, how can we defend ourselves?)
Bibliography

Purpose of the examination is to assess if / how well the learning objectives have been met.
The examination will consist of a written test (open-ended questions) and of an oral test. Identification of rocks and fossil specimens will be part of the oral test.
Evaluation criteria
Accuracy of answers in the written test and rock recognition; ability to link topics.
Criteria for the composition of the final grade
Starting grade based on answers in the written test. Completion during the oral examination, with possible correction by the candidate of errors in the written test.
Exam language
Italiano. Inglese se richiesto dal caldidato.
