Academic calendar
The academic calendar shows the deadlines and scheduled events that are relevant to students, teaching and technical-administrative staff of the University. Public holidays and University closures are also indicated. The academic year normally begins on 1 October each year and ends on 30 September of the following year.

Learning objectives
The course is aimed at providing a basic knowledge of the structure of criminal proceedings – with particular regard to how criminal investigations take place and to the functions and activities of the police – in order to enable students to enrich their competences as specialists of safety and prevention on workplace.
Program
It will be provided an overview of the general principles of criminal proceedings. Particular attention will be dedicated to the subjects of the proceedings: defendant; presumption of innocence; habeas corpus; defence rights; public prosecutor; police; prosecution; impartiality of the judge; the functional distinction between preliminary investigations and trial; the role of the right to confrontation in relation to the admission and collection of evidence.
Afterwards, the course will focus on the so-called “dynamic part” of criminal procedure. It will be illustrated the development of the criminal prooceedings from the acquirement of the notice that a crime has been committed to the sentence through the different phases of preliminary investigations, preliminary hearing and trial.
In consideration of the specific learning outcomes of the course, It will be analyzed in detail the role, the activities and the functions of the police.
It will be examined the regulation of: surveillance and security activities taking place before the notice that a crime has been committed is acquired; sampling; the activities of the police during preliminary investigations, with specific regard to recording modalities and the relationships with the public prosecutor.
Finally, the regulation of evidence will be considered; in particlular, attention will be paid to the rules concerning the collection of evidence and the use of the acts of preliminary investigations.

Learning assessment procedures
Students will be examinated through an oral test. They will be questioned on the issues dealt with during the course. Students shall demonstrate knowledge of the theoretical notions being implicated in the course and the capacity to explain and manage such notions with the appropriate technical language.
Evaluation criteria
The exam is passed if the assessment is equal to or greater than 18/30.
