Learning outcomes

The course aims at introducing the students to the most important periods and trends of German 19th Century literature: Romantic literature, “Vormärz”, “Biedermeier”, Realism, Naturalism. At the end of the course students are required to possess a thourough knowledege of the topics we dealt with, with regard to both the literature-historic aspects as well as the works in German; moreover they are required to be capable of analyzing and understanding these texts and to explain the knowledge acquired in proper German speech.

The course consists of one single module (taught class); after a short introduction in Italian the course will be held in German. The course aims at introducing German literature and culture of the 19th century. At the end of the course students will have to attain deep knowledge both of the historical context and of the different literary works. Grimm, Kinder und Hausmärchen. - Heinrich Heine: Die romantische Schule -Georg Büchner: Lenz; Woyzek; Dantons Tod; - Franz Grillparzer, Der arme Spielmann; - Gerhard Hauptmann, Die Weber. The focus of the cultural part of the program is centered on “Food, Diet and Hunger in the German Culture of 19th century”. Starting from the famous sentence by Ludwig Feuerbach “Der Mensch ist, was er isst” we are going to study in the above listed texts the topics related to food, lack of food and the decline of food. Literature: In German: Annemarie und Wolfgang van Rinsum, Frührealismus 1815-1848, München DTV 1993 (selected passages), Annemarie und Wolfgang van Rinsum, Realismus und Naturalismus, München DTV 1994 (selected passages). In Italian: Marino Freschi, La letteratura tedesca, Bologna il Mulino 2008; Anton Reininger, Storia della letteratura tedesca fra l’Illuminismo e il Postmoderno, Torino Rosenberg & Selllier 2005 Part of the texts will be handed out as photocopies. Further teaching material will be available on the e-learning platform related to the class. Non-attending students are requested to agree with the docent upon part of the literature-history programme and to focus the second part of the programme on the study of works representative of the 19th Century literature.
