Learning objectives
Acquisition of a good command of the research tools related to early modern history, so that the student is able to critically use the sources and scientific literature related to one or more themes chosen as central to the course. The teaching activity will therefore aim to develop the individual research skills of the student as much as possible.
Prerequisites and basic notions
Good knowledge of early modern history. The course will have a seminar character, and therefore also includes the reading and commenting, with the participation of the students, of the sources that are gradually analysed.
Program
"Between history and politics. At the origins of modern historiography: Machiavelli and Guicciardini"
History writing is one of the ways in which man remembers his past. Practiced since antiquity, it was initially little distinguished from rhetoric, the discipline that generally regulates the forms of speaking and writing. In other words, narration prevailed over method and content. A turning point took place in the Renaissance, under the impetus of the new approach introduced by Humanism, when some authors, in precise contexts, began writing history that anticipated the truly modern methods to which we adhere today. After an overview of the previous tradition, through the study of Machiavelli and Guicciardini as authors of history in the period of the Italian crisis of the early 1500s, analyzed according to the most recent acquisitions, the course will follow this evolution, explaining by which ways, and through which personal and intellectual events, each of the two came to produce his own work according to the new canons, preparing the ground for the forms and methods of contemporary historiography. A final part will be dedicated to reflecting on the ways in which later historiography appropriated these developments.

Didactic methods
The course will have a seminar character, and therefore also includes the reading and commenting, with the participation of the students, of the sources that are gradually analysed. Readings of particular texts will be gradually assigned by the teacher, and the students will take care to read them in time to encourage better active participation in the seminar work.
Learning assessment procedures
The exam will consist of:
1. of an ORAL PART, based on the knowledge of the indicated texts (see Libri di testo / Reference texts), of the materials distributed during the lessons and (for attending students) of the lesson notes;
2. a WRITTEN PAPER of 40-50,000 characters (notes included) on a topic related to the course and agreed with the teacher. The written text must be sent to the teacher at least two weeks before the oral exam (according to methods to be agreed with the teacher during office hours).
Evaluation criteria
Assimilation of the concepts conveyed during the course and ability to present them by arguing and connecting them critically with the illustrated sources.
Criteria for the composition of the final grade
50% Oral exam
50% Paper

Double degree
The University of Verona, through a network of agreements with foreign universities, offers international courses that enable students to gain a Double/Joint degree at the time of graduation. Indeed, students enrolled in a Double/Joint degree programme will be able to obtain both the degree of the University of Verona and the degree issued by the Partner University abroad - where they are expected to attend part of the programme -, in the time it normally takes to gain a common Master’s degree. The institutions concerned shall ensure that both degrees are recognised in the two countries.
Places on these programmes are limited, and admissions and any applicable grants are subject to applicants being selected in a specific Call for applications.
The latest Call for applications for Double/Joint Degrees at the University of Verona is available now!
