Learning objectives

This course provides basic knowledge of more common chemical industrial processes, with a specific attention on hazardous substances involved in the industrial production, on active and passive safety systems and sensors, on chemical risk evaluation assessment.

Program

1) Chemical-physical parameters of the substances
Definitions of chemical-physical stability, fire and explosion risks in an industrial plant.
2) Classification of hazardous chemical substances
REACH Regulation; CLP protocol, hazard and precautionary statements.
3) Oil industry
Refinery - Petrochemical plants - Coal
4) Petrochemical industry: processes and products
Olefin production - Main petrochemical process layouts
5) Basic organic products from industries
Methanol - Formaldheyde - Halocarbons - Aromatic compounds
6) Final organic products from industries
Polymers - Resins - Dyes and pigments - Detergents
7) Inorganic products from industries
Nitrogen cycle: fertilizers - Sulphur cycle: sulphuric acid - Phosphorus cycle: fertilizers, elemental phosphorus - Cements and ceramics - Electrochemical processes: chlorine production - Galvanic processes.
8) Chemical risk evaluation in industry
Index methods for the evaluation of the cehemical risk in industries. Case studies.

Didactic methods

The course is based on lectures. All lecture notes and slides, together with final tests are available for all students. If some constraints will be active, due to pandemic events, the course will be held on zoom platform.

Learning assessment procedures

Written test on the topics exposed during the course: descriptions of hazardous points in industrial plants, release scenarios, classification and evaluation of the chemical risk.

Students with disabilities or specific learning disorders (SLD), who intend to request the adaptation of the exam, must follow the instructions given HERE

Evaluation criteria

The final mark, from the written test, will take into account of the experience acquired from the student about the evaluation of the indistrial risk. The final mark will be expressed in a thirtieth scale.
