The academic calendar shows the deadlines and scheduled events that are relevant to students, teaching and technical-administrative staff of the University. Public holidays and University closures are also indicated. The academic year normally begins on 1 October each year and ends on 30 September of the following year.

Learning outcomes
Learning outcomes
The course is proposed as a starting point for the approach to the themes and methodologies of contemporary history. It intends to provide the knowledge of the main events of European history from 1789 to 1914 and is focused on political, cultural and social history which is dealt with a comparative and transnational perspective.
At the end of the course, the student must be able to know: a) problems and methods of contemporary history, b) the periodicity related to the definition of so called “long nineeenth century”, c) the most relevant events of this period, knowing to distinguish between those general and those related to the different national realities, c) the most important political cultures, economics processes and social transformations that mark the indicated period, e) historiographic interpretations.

The history of the “long nineteenth century”
The first two lessons are dedicated to framing some of the main methodological questions concerning the study of contemporary history. Subsequenntly, after having franed the meaning of the American and French revolution and having analyzed the characteristics of the Industrial Revolution, the course focusedon the following topics:
- The bourgeois revolutions of 1848,
- The different processes of national unification and the transformation of political systems,
- -The Risorgimento and teh process of Italian unification,
- The Europe of great powers,
- The first globalisation and the division of the world
- The birth of mass and society
- The crisis of European political balances in the early twentieth century.

Didactic modes:
The course includes the alternation between the lessons of the teacher, the educational visit, the screening of films and audiovisual materials.
Examination Methods
Examination procedure
1. Assessment methods: structured written exam in open and closed questions.
2. Objectives: to verify the ability to disply concepts using appropriate historical terminoloy, the ability to link events and to place them adequately within the individual national contexts and the
3. Contents: the questions will focus on the topics covered during the course and developed in the volumes indicated in the bibliography.
4. Assessment methods: score expressed in thirtieths, resulting from the sum of the points assigned to each of the questions.
Other informations
The course is propaedeutic to the frequency of Contemporary History (p) which will take place in the second semester.
The required prerequisites are: basic knowledge of historical events between the mid-eighteenth century and early twentieth century.
Erasmus students (and students hosted with other international mobility programs) who attend classes, can choose between written and oral exam. They can also use books in foreign languages (English, French and Spanish).
