Learning outcomes
The aim of the course is to introduce students to the knowledge of modern and contemporary Italian literature; present and analyze texts by Italian authors under a historical, critical and formal point of view.
Program
The early twentieth-century novel: Tozzi, Svevo, and Gadda
The course aims to offer a historical-critical overview of contemporary Italian literature with specific focus on early twentieth-century novels.
The course will first provide an introduction both into narratology (Genette’s and Stanzel’s theory) and into the literary category of Modernism. It will then focus on the relationship(s) between novel, Italian periodicals, and such literary trends in twentieth-century italian prose as fragmentism, autobiography, and “prosa d'arte”. An in-depth examination of three of the most representative novels of the period will then follow (Federigo Tozzi’s Con gli occhi chiusi; Italo Svevo’s La coscienza di Zeno; Carlo Emilio Gadda’s La cognizione del dolore).
Particular attention will be given to the interaction between medical discourse and literary works.
Novel will be analysed both from a narratological and a historical-critical point of view.
TEACHING METHOD:
The course will be conducted in class. Lessons will be recorded and will remain available on the Moodle platform for 30 days.

Examination Methods
The students’ knowledge on the course contents will be assessed through an oral examination, which will aim to ascertain:
- the students’ ability to place the literary texts that form part of the course program in the Modernism;
- their ability to explain, in appropriate language, the meaning of the novel, and the main linguistic-stylistic and narratological aspects of the texts under scrutiny;
- their ability to reflect on such texts within the frame of their literary genres.
The assessment method applies to all students, both attending and not attending classes.
