Program
What is happiness? Politics, freedom, public life in Alexis de Tocqueville and Hannah Arendt
When we speak of happiness we usually intend private happiness. Similarly, when we vindicate our freedom we tend to conceive it individually. For Hannah Arendt, passionate reader of Tocqueville, happiness and freedom have largely to do with public and political life. Thecourse intends to analyze the main work by Alexis de Tocqueville, Democracy in America, and interrogate the displacing question posed by Arendt, namely that freedom coincides with the possibility to actively participate in politics and this experience opens to the possibility of a “public happiness”.
