Learning objectives
The main aim of the course in Archaeology and History of Greek and Roman Art (m) is to acquire useful knowledge to recognise the importance of the interdisciplinary methodological approach in the archaeological interpretation of the artistic and artisanal manifestations of the Greco-Roman civilisation between the 9th century BC and the beginning of the 4th century AD. During the lectures a general framework of the Greek and Roman artistic production will be developed through a specific thematic approach that will investigate the relationship between Greek and Roman culture and its particular expression in the ancient art and material culture. As part of the course will be organised some follow-up meetings, developed through a cross-cutting issue as the research on the relationship between Greek and Roman sculpture; pottery painting and visual transmission; the globalisation of the Roman taste. The expected results of learning are: KNOWLEDGES: 1. To be familiar with the interdisciplinary methodological approach in the archaeological reading and interpretation of material data. 2. To be familiar with some specific archaeological terminology. 3. To be acquainted with the diachronic development of different styles and techniques, of cultural forms due to variety of artistic choices and the role of the one who orders the commission. SKILLS 1. To apply an interdisciplinary methodological approach in the reading and interpretation of the ancient art. 2. To put into the correct social, economic and historical background the artistic expressions of the Greek and Roman culture. 3. To disseminate by using suitable vocabulary aspects of the Greek and Roman archaeological heritage.

Program
The programme will be divided into three major sections:
1) Introduction to Greek archaeology and art history will take place through the presentation of artistic productions and the main monumental complexes from the Geometric Age to Hellenism, linked from time to time to the different geo-cultural contexts.
2) Introduction to Roman archaeology and art history will take place through the presentation of artistic productions and the main monumental complexes from the Republican age to Constantine, with specific reference to Rome and the Italic territory.
3) Thematic Insights:
- An initial in-depth study will focus on Hellenistic and Roman painting by analysing some case studies of Macedonian and Thracian tombs and Roman domus.
- A second in-depth study will focus on the artistic manifestations in ceramics and glass from the Roman era.

Didactic methods
Classes will rely extensively on PowerPoint presentations made available to the students on the Moodle e-learning platform. Teaching materials include slides to be integrated with reference readings. The module will also include follow-up meetings and seminars and possible participation to conferences and study trips.
Learning assessment procedures
The aim of the exam is to test the expected learning outcomes described above. It consists of oral questions: students will be asked to identify and date some monuments and artifacts and to describe and discuss their stylistic and technical characteristics (on the basis of the images included in the PowerPoint presentations).
The final assessment will be based on the students’ knowledge and ability to identify the monuments and the objects presented during the lectures, to give a technical description and chronological overview, as well as to draw broader conclusions on the social, economic, historical and cultural framework in which they were produced.

Double degree
The University of Verona, through a network of agreements with foreign universities, offers international courses that enable students to gain a Double/Joint degree at the time of graduation. Indeed, students enrolled in a Double/Joint degree programme will be able to obtain both the degree of the University of Verona and the degree issued by the Partner University abroad - where they are expected to attend part of the programme -, in the time it normally takes to gain a common Master’s degree. The institutions concerned shall ensure that both degrees are recognised in the two countries.
Places on these programmes are limited, and admissions and any applicable grants are subject to applicants being selected in a specific Call for applications.

Prova finale
Alla prova finale per il conseguimento della laurea magistrale in Storia delle arti sono assegnati 24 cfu. La prova finale consiste nella preparazione e nella discussione di una tesi di laurea magistrale, di non meno di 120 pagine scritte, elaborata in modo originale dallo studente sotto la guida di un docente relatore; è prevista la figura del correlatore. L'argomento della prova finale deve riguardare uno degli insegnamenti del piano di studi. I laureati devono saper dimostrare con il lavoro di tesi di aver applicato le loro conoscenze, di possedere capacità di comprensione e abilità nella risoluzione di problemi e nell'affrontare tematiche nuove in modo autonomo e in un contesto di ricerca e di progettazione originale. La discussione della prova finale ha luogo davanti a una Commissione composta secondo le relative norme del Regolamento didattico di Ateneo. Per la prova finale è previsto un massimo di 7 punti. Per l'attribuzione del punteggio la commissione si attiene ai seguenti criteri: 1) originalità dell'elaborato; 2) efficacia e coerenza nelle argomentazioni; 3) qualità della scrittura; 4) capacità dello studente di illustrare e discutere adeguatamente il suo lavoro davanti alla commissione. La votazione è espressa in centodecimi, a cui la Commissione può aggiungere, in casi di eccellenza, la distinzione della lode.
