Learning outcomes
The module of History of historiography aims to deepen the problems and methods that underlie the work of the historian, introducing the student to some "secrets of the trade". The course also aims to enable the student to "read critically" and "understand" a history book understood as a "product of the work of the historian".
This does not just mean knowing its contents organically, but rather breaking it down trying to grasp the following elements: a) by what problem the author is moved to write; b) what is the research path behind it; c) in what type of culture of insert (historical, political, philosophical, ideological, religious context); d) what sources were used and how; e) what methodological approaches were adopted; f) what new contribution the book led to historical discipline. At the end of the course the student will have to demonstrate to be able to overcome the manual simplifications (producers of unconscious stereotypes) and historiographical clichés, verifying on the sources and texts the best known interpretative schemes.
Program
"The historiography on the Enlightenment between the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. The eighteenth century philosophers and that of historians"
The introductory module will be dedicated, as every year, to a general profile of the history of Western historiography from antiquity to the present day, with particular attention to the historiography of the 19th and 20th centuries.
The monographic part will deal instead with the history of the interpretations of the eighteenth century and in particular the culture of the Enlightenment between the nineteenth and twentieth centuries.

Examination Methods
Oral examination. The interview focuses on the broad lines of the history of Western historiography and on in-depth readings and aims to ascertain the student’s ability to critically read a book, identifying its historiographical implications. The exam should also ascertain: the property of language and the conscious use of historiographical categories and terms, analytical and argumentative skills, the ability to contextualize a problem and to make links between different topics; the ability to formulate new problems from the readings taken.
Examination sessions are defined as:
1. The autumn session (September)
2. The winter session (January-February)
3. Summer session (June-July)

Double degree
The University of Verona, through a network of agreements with foreign universities, offers international courses that enable students to gain a Double/Joint degree at the time of graduation. Indeed, students enrolled in a Double/Joint degree programme will be able to obtain both the degree of the University of Verona and the degree issued by the Partner University abroad - where they are expected to attend part of the programme -, in the time it normally takes to gain a common Master’s degree. The institutions concerned shall ensure that both degrees are recognised in the two countries.
Places on these programmes are limited, and admissions and any applicable grants are subject to applicants being selected in a specific Call for applications.
The latest Call for applications for Double/Joint Degrees at the University of Verona is available now!
