Program
The course focuses on some fundamental concepts of Augustine's philosophy: subjectivity, knowledge, truth, love, community. Through the reading and commentary of the Confessions (and other salient places in the Augustinian work) these issues will be investigated in their pre- and post-history: that is, with attention both to their sources (Ciceronian, Platonic, Pauline...) and their powerful resonances in modern and contemporary thought (from Descartes to Gilson). Martin Heidegger's and, with special attention, Hannah Arendt's interpretations of Augustine will be analyzed.
