Learning objectives

Aims of the course are: 1. equip students with technical knowledge about moments and aspects of the history of Latin writing (in their origins and socio-cultural effects) along with the analysis and the review of significant specimens; in these practice sessions emphasis is on distinguishing characteristic letter forms and spelling peculiarities which date and place classical and medieval manuscripts; 2. provide for this via the methodological and critical tools needed to conduct an autonomous research work, by consulting sources in the original; 3. inform about the techniques of cataloguing medieval manuscripts and documents, with particular attention to the information technologies applied to the historical research and to the issues related.
