Academic calendar
The academic calendar shows the deadlines and scheduled events that are relevant to students, teaching and technical-administrative staff of the University. Public holidays and University closures are also indicated. The academic year normally begins on 1 October each year and ends on 30 September of the following year.

Learning outcomes
Through various different teaching methods (lectures, discussions, meetings with experts, short films), the course aims to introduce students to a critical understanding of key concepts of the discipline in order to analyze through them how different contemporary situations are approached in the media, highlighting the peculiar sensitivity and the potentiality of an anthropological gaze.
At the end of the course the student is expected to have a better understanding of the main categories used within anthropology; become acquainted with anthropological research practices; be capable of making use of the acquired tools to approach contemporary (inter)cultural processes; be capable of a critical approach regarding relevant issues in the public debate.
Program
The course will address issues related to the difficulties of communication across cultures.
The field of interest concerns the phenomenon of migration flows. The multi-disciplinary approach involving the fields of anthropology of migration and anthropology of language aims to lead students to an enhanced awareness of intercultural situations.
The course will focus on three fundamental concepts in communication: mediation, linguistic and (inter) cultural communication.
The basic principles and stages of mediation will be examined by highlighting as much as possible the linguistic and cultural differences depending on the situations, subjects involved and topics being discussed.
Starting from the mutual difficulties that intercultural communication entails in the relationship with Otherness, then continuing with case studies at three levels: basic, intermediate and advanced (more complex), useful tools will be provided for the understanding of intercultural processes. . Furthermore, the anthropological perspective will help the acquisition of new interactive skills requiring students to trigger different kinds of gaze and language compared to mainstream ones.

Examination Methods
Assessment methods and criteria are distinguished between attending students and non-attending students.
For attending students: the methods of attendance (2/3 of the lessons) and assessment (ongoing and final) will be presented at the beginning of the course. The exam will take place in written form and consists in writing a final report on a case study related to intercultural field. The score in this case is expected to be 27 out of 30 for the final report, and a maximum of 3 points for the discussion. It is hereby pointed out that students will be granted mediated access to migrant community associations.
For non-attending students: the exam will take place in oral form. Students are invited to sit for the exam with the texts they have studied. The oral exam consists in answering to the questions regarding the entire program. The final assessment is expressed in 30ths.
The oral exam aims to check student’s:
- breadth/wealth of knowledge;
- language skills;
- ability to make connections.
