PhD students must obtain a specified number of CFUs each year by attending teaching activities offered by the PhD School.
First and second year students must obtain 8 CFUs. Teaching activities ex DM 226/2021 provide 5 CFUs; free choice activities provide 3 CFUs.
Third year students must obtain 4 CFUs. Teaching activities ex DM 226/2021 provide 2 CFUs; free choice activities provide 2 CFUs.

Learning objectives

The course will provide an overview on the main designs applied in observational (cross-sectional, cohort, case-control, ecologic) and experimental (parallel groups, cross-over, factorial) research. Strengths and limitations of these designs will be discussed.

Prerequisites and basic notions

There are no prerequisites for this course.

Program

The course is designed to offer doctoral students an introductory understanding of epidemiological methods, focusing on the key designs of observational and experimental studies. Additionally, an overview of inference and various models for statistical data analysis will be presented.
Course topics:
- descriptive vs analytic epidemiology
- experimental vs observational research
- measures of disease frequency and estimates of association
- main observational and experimental study designs
- methods for the analysis of binary outcomes
- internal validity
- precision and power
- external validity
-hypothesis testing and confidence intervals
- superiority, non-inferiority, and equivalence trials
- logical pitfalls of statistical significance based on thresholds
- multiple testing issues

When and where

The teaching is structured in frontal theoretical lessons (8 hours). Lessons will be delivered in presence + Zoom. Full attendance is required.
