Learning objectives
The main objective of the course is to provide tools and knowledge about various aspects of human, medical and molecular, genetics. This includes the characterization of different types of DNA variation and their functional impact, the study of genome structure and function, gene regulation and maintenance, genetic variability in populations, and the characterization of genetic factors involved in the pathogenic mechanisms of monogenic and complex diseases.
The student should attain a solid understanding of the inheritance patterns of monogenic and multifactorial diseases, about characterization of different types of DNA variation and of their functional impact, and the experimental approaches that can integrate data from various omics sciences to identify the genetic causes that define and influence disease-associated mechanisms. Furthermore, they should demonstrate the ability to describe key genetic concepts, connect different aspects of human and medical genetics succinctly, with language mastery, and independently exhibit critical thinking.
Examination Methods
The examination will consist of a written test, which will include: a) Open-ended questions or multiple-choice questions to assess knowledge of the discipline. b) Exercises to evaluate the ability to apply the acquired knowledge.
Evaluation criteria
The examination assesses knowledge, language proficiency, the ability to interpret results, and problem-solving skills. The final grade is determined by the evaluation of the responses and the performance on exercises, and it is considered passing for a score equal to or greater than 18/30.
