L-FIL-LET/02 - LINGUA E LETTERATURA GRECA
Learning objectives
The course in Greek Art Prose and Rhetoric aims to: - describe diachronically the linguistic characteristics of art prose (Kunstprosa) in ancient Greek as an alternative first and then indipendent means of communication vis-à-vis poetic genres; - analyze and study its attestations as the language of pre-Socratic philosophy, historiography, dialogue, oratory, also with reference to transmissive dialects; - trace the origins of theoretical reflection on the use of prose as a tool of persuasion, that is, the origins of the art of rhetoric; - follow the developments of rhetoric through theoretical formalization of prose structures touching on its main turning points, including in relation to the function of poetry (e.g., Aristotle, Dionysius of Halicarnassus, the Atticist movement, Hermogenes, etc.). LEARNING OBJECTIVES The course aims to provide students with knowledge that enables linguistic and literary analysis of texts, along with sufficient skills to place them in historical development within first the Greek world and then the imperial world, up to the Late Antique period. At the end of the course, students will acquire the ability to identify, analyze, and place chronologically (if possible) the linguistic, lexical and stylistic aspects of prose texts; in addition, students will be able to connect the concrete practice of discourse with its theoretical counterpart in the treatises on rhetoric.
