Learning objectives

THEORY: The aim of the course is to give to the student a robust background of Organic Chemistry, in order to discuss and solve problems in several environments (from the Organic and agricultural Chemistry to the biochemistry and oenology). The student must be able to assign the right IUPAC name to each molecule under investigation and to predict its chemical-physical properties and reactivity. The students are also asked to establish a relationship between the nature of the functional groups studied during the course and such properties. LAB: Thanks to this course the student will aquire the manual skills practice necessary in a common chemistry or eonology laboratory. He will consolidate the dexterity already aquired during the general chemistry laboratory course. The experimantal organic chemistry carried out during this course will be also useful in order to consolidate several theoretical crucial concepts learnt during the main course.

Prerequisites and basic notions

There are no specific prerequisites other than those required for access to the degree course

Program

------------------------
UL: Teoria
------------------------
The syllabus of the course is as follows: -Introduction -hybridation and bonds -acids and bases -alkanes -alkenes -alkynes -stereochemistry -alkyl halides -alchols -thiol and sulphides -ethers and epoxides -organometallic compounds -benzene and aromatic compounds -phenols e polyphenols -aldehydes and ketones -carboxylic acids and their derivatives -aromatic heterocycles -amines -aminoacids and proteins -sugars
------------------------
UL: Laboratorio
------------------------
Each student will perform in a group (total two or three people per group) 4 laboratory experiences entitled:
- Analysis of chiral substances by polarimeter
- Reducing and non-reducing carbohydrates (Benedict's assay);
- Titration of amino acids (Evaluation of the species present at equilibrium and at the end point);
- Chromatographic separation of photosynthetic pigments.

Didactic methods

UL: Theory Lectures
UL: Laboratory Laboratory experiences
Lessons will be delivered exclusively in person without any recourse to emergency online teaching methods. It will not be provided in other ways except limited to students who, due to Covid, cannot access the University, upon presentation of the relative request on the appropriate form. The delivery methods relating to this case will be decided by the teacher and may include sending the recording, organizing a lesson in streaming, sending additional material or organizing a meeting in person or remotely.

Learning assessment procedures

------------------------
UL: Theory
------------------------
Written exam: 6 exercises, available time 1 and a half hours.
The exam consists of a written verification of the level of knowledge on organic chemistry and the ability to apply the basic principles to specific cases. The student will be asked to properly represent molecules using standard conventions, recognize isomerism, identify the reactive groups and develop reaction mechanisms.
The test consists of a written exam divided into six open-ended exercises (time available 90 minutes). The final grade is given by the sum of the scores obtained in the individual exercises.
To take the final exam it is mandatory to have attended at least 75% of the organic chemistry laboratory course (at least 3 experiences) and to submit the reports of the laboratory experiences.
VARIATIONS WILL BE POSSIBLE ON THE METHOD OF EXAMINATION ON THE BASIS OF THE CONDITIONS SET BY THE HEALTH EMERGENCY
------------------------
UL: Laboratory
------------------------
In the test associated with the Theory module, questions related to the 4 laboratory experiments performed will be included.
------------------------
UL: Laboratory
------------------------

Students with disabilities or specific learning disorders (SLD), who intend to request the adaptation of the exam, must follow the instructions given HERE

Evaluation criteria

------------------------
UL: Theory
------------------------
Ability to organize knowledge.
Ability to think critically and to solve exercises on the proposed topics
------------------------
UL: Laboratory
------------------------
For each laboratory experience, the student will be requested to write a brief report on the results and a critical commentary. Understanding of practical experiences will be verified through questions included in the written test of the theoretical course.
------------------------

Criteria for the composition of the final grade

The final score is given by the sum of the points obtained in the individual exercises carried out in the exam.
