Academic calendar
The academic calendar shows the deadlines and scheduled events that are relevant to students, teaching and technical-administrative staff of the University. Public holidays and University closures are also indicated. The academic year normally begins on 1 October each year and ends on 30 September of the following year.

Learning outcomes
Aims
The course examines the most current issues related to the activities of the United Nations and the compatibility thereof with international law, including fundamental human rights. It is organised in the form of seminars on specific topics, where the active participation of students, including through oral presentations, will be encouraged, in order to enhance their analytical approach to the subject. The course is held in English and it is also aimed at making students familiar with the primary sources, in particular instruments and documents drawn from United Nations practice.

The course will provide an in-depth analysis of the following topics: 1) the United Nations: historical development and institutional articulation; 2) the United Nations system of collective security, with special regard to the functions of the Security Council and to the concept of ‘responsibility to protect’ 3) the law-making functions of the Security Council; 4) the fight against international terrorism, the so-called ‘targeted sanctions’ and the protection of fundamental human rights; 6) the international administration of territories, with special regard to the role of the United Nations and of regional organizations; 7) the responsibility of international organisations, with special focus on the acts of peace-support operations (the Behrami and Beric before the European Court of Human Rights); 8) the reform of the United Nations, in particular the plans for the reform of the Security Council and the institution of the Human Rights Council.

Exam
Students will be examined orally, with a view to assessing their knowledge of the subject-matters and their familiarity with the primary sources dealt with during the course.

Internships
Internships are aimed at enabling students to gain direct knowledge of the world of work and to acquire specific professional skills.
Internships are carried out under the responsibility of an individual lecturer, and can be carried out in professional firms, public administration bodies and companies recognised by the University of Verona.
Any CFU credits gained by doing internships will be recognised and recorded by the University in accordance with the relevant University regulations in force (Regolamento d’Ateneo per il riconoscimento dei crediti maturati negli stage universitari).
