Learning outcomes

Acquaintance with new methodologies and sources for the study of political history.

Program

"Political History in the early modern and contemporary eras"
What is politics? And how can we write political history today? Which methodologies and approaches are used? The seminar intends to answer these questions reflecting on the relationships between some of the major intellectuals of the twentieth century (Walter Benjamin, Hannah Arendt, Theodor Adorno) and analysing the thought of some Renaissance political theorists (Erasmus of Rotterdam, Francesco Guicciardini, Nicolò Machiavelli).
The course will be articulated in two modules. In the first part it will be illustrated the political culture of the twentieth century, interweaving personal biographies and theoretical approaches. The second module will define some important categories of political history, such as public opinion and propaganda, within the historical context of the Italian Wars (give dates?).
The course is structured as a series of seminars involving shared readings and discussions of primary sources.
