Learning outcomes

The course aims at providing the students with the knowledge of the most important painting techniques from the Middle Ages to the Modern Era, as well as the literary and iconographic sources such knowledge is based on.

Program

The course is organised in two sections. In the first part, the fundamental painting techniques used in the Middle Ages and in the Modern Era will be introduced; the students will be also provided with the essential methodological tools related to the subject. In the second part, following the introductory section, a variety of case studies will be presented in order to deepen the understanding of some technical specificities, particular cultural contexts, and the history of restoration and conservation.
