Learning outcomes

The course is aimed at providing a basic knowledge and fundamental tools for the research activity in the field of ancient Near Eastern history and archaeology. To this aim the lessons will propose relevant case studies, illustrate methods and goals of the analysis according to various approaches and exemplify the use of documentary sources and secondary literature.

Program

the cultural heritage of Syria and Iraq, threatened or destroyed during war and terrorism operations; description of major archaeological sites and their role in the ancient Near Eastern history and Mediterranean culture. Description and analysis of the archaeological evidence, aimed at reconstructing forms of monuments and architectural structures and assessing their meaning in the frame-work of historical and art-history developments. Reflection on events and presuppositions of the archaeological discovery and of present-day destructions. Consideration of sites and monuments in relation to their founding significance for local communities and of their universal value, through the analysis of their influence on following periods and bordering areas, i.e. phenomena of transmission, diffusion, contamination, that illustrate their historical and cultural value for Mediterranean culture from antiquity to present. Analysis of the Syrian sites of Ebla, Aleppo, Palmyra, of the great Assyrian capitals, Nineveh, Kalkhu, Dur-Sharruken, and of Hatra and Babylon in Iraq, with a detailed study of the monumental evidence.
