ING-INF/05 - INFORMATION PROCESSING SYSTEMS

Learning outcomes

The course introduce the fundamentals of Human Computer Interaction, describing the historical context of HCI, and concepts that enable computer scientists to design systems that effectively meet human needs.
Virtual reality and evaluation will be the main topic of the lab activity in the first part.
Finally some lessons on advanced interaction issues in visualization and virtual reality and an introductory module on Brain Computer interface will be proposed.
At the end of the course the students
-will be able to understand usability principles and apply them to the design of computer applications
-will be able to design and implement virtual reality applications with awareness of the specific issues
-will be able to develop brain-computer interface by applying signal processing techniques

Program

Part 1: Basics
-Human capabilities: Input Output Systems, Memory and Learning, Cognitive Processing
-Computing systems, I/O methods, interfaces
-Interaction paradigms.
-Interaction design
-Interactive systems and applications

Part 2
-Virtual Reality and Natural interaction
-Virtual Reality Lab: Unity development
-Exercises on evaluation and design of Virtual Reality and Natural interaction systems
Part 3
-Advanced module on Brain-Computer interaction with lab

Examination Methods

The course is divided in three blocks, Fundamentals of HCI, Virtual Reality, BCI, and an oral evaluation will be dedicated to each one, also discussing the lab exercise presented during the lab sessions.

To pass the exam, the student must show
-to have understood the principles discussed in the modules
-to be able to apply them in different applications
-to be able to design and carry on interaction experiments in an autonomous way

The final vote will be the average of the three parts
