At the end of the course, students will be able to - know the basic concepts necessary to define a language, variety or dialect - have a general vision of Hispanic dialectal complexity and the internal variation of Spanish, placing emphasis on their current situation - manage the methodological principles of dialectology that allow the student to distinguish and recognize the most relevant characteristics of the varieties of Spanish - describe synchronically the dialectal varieties of Spanish from their complete linguistic characterization (phonological, morphosyntactic and lexical-semantic), as well as the keys of this variation - analyze any written and oral document and know how to locate it in the corresponding geographical area, taking into account also the application to the teaching of Spanish as a foreign language - work autonomously in the analysis of texts, dominating the basic bibliography and using the main historical, etymological and dialectal dictionaries, taking into account also the application to the teaching of Spanish as a foreign language

Program

In addition to the theoretical contents taught during the class, the practical analysis of written and oral documents will be carried out, allowing the student to understand and apply the theoretical concepts taught in class and the lexicographical work with dictionaries and other online resources. To this will be added the critical reading of certain key texts.
For this, each class will have a theoretical part and a practical part. In the practical part, oral or written texts will be analyzed and the obligatory readings will be commented.

The bibliography will be indicated at the beginning of the course.

The training objectives and the contents of the course are the same for the students of Laurea magistrale in Comparative European and Non-European Languages and Literatures as for the students of Editoria e Giornalismo.

The course will be held in Spanish.

Examination Methods

The exam consists of a test on theoretical and practical questions related to the course program, the bibliography and the didactic materials. Both the formulation of the questions and the answers will be made in writing and in Spanish. The test will consist of two parts:
Theoretical part: general theoretical considerations
Practical part: analysis of a text with the objective of identifying the variety and indicating the linguistic features (phonetic, morphological, semantic and syntactic) that characterize the text in question.
The grade will be determined by calculating the average between the score obtained in the linguistic competence (C2) and that obtained in the test of the subject. The results will be communicated through a notice published on the corresponding website ("Avvisi"). For students who do not attend class, the program and the form of evaluation are the same.

LINGUISTIC COMPETENCE REQUIRED:
Level 5 (ALTE), C2 (Council of Europe).
Assessment of linguistic competence will be on the grounds of certificates issued by the CLA (the University Linguistic Centre) or by other accredited institutions (see “Students’ Manual”, p. 25). Linguistic competence is propaedeutic.

Erasmus students should contact the teacher.

Double degree

The University of Verona, through a network of agreements with foreign universities, offers international courses that enable students to gain a Double/Joint degree at the time of graduation. Indeed, students enrolled in a Double/Joint degree programme will be able to obtain both the degree of the University of Verona and the degree issued by the Partner University abroad - where they are expected to attend part of the programme -, in the time it normally takes to gain a common Master’s degree. The institutions concerned shall ensure that both degrees are recognised in the two countries.

Places on these programmes are limited, and admissions and any applicable grants are subject to applicants being selected in a specific Call for applications.

The latest Call for applications for Double/Joint Degrees at the University of Verona is available now!
