Learning outcomes

The course would like to provide the students with the historical and conceptual instruments to better understand the classics of the Jewish thought, especially those from the modern and contemporary age. It aims to offer:
a) a basic knowledge of the historical context of these classics;
b) the philosophical, theological, and ethical concepts present in these classics;
c) the ability to recognize their sources;
d) the ability to understand the methods and the major themes of a rabbinical discussions;
e) the appreciation for the philosophical value of those methods and discussions.

Program

Prerequisites:
The students should have a basic knowledge of the major cultural events of the Western civilization.

Contents:
The course is based on an analytical reading of the text, written by the American rabbi Joseph Ber Soloveitchik (1903-1993), "The Lonely Man of Faith."
a) We will read some pages and analyze them with philosphical lents;
b) we will explore comments and sorces of the the text;
c) we will underline the aspects of continuity and discontinuity with the rest of Soloveitchik's other teachings.

Teaching Methods:
The corse is made of the instructor's lectures and students lead seminars, which aim to develop critical thinking and autonomous judgements. A short paper is suggested.

Given the complexity of the subject metter, it is warmly recommended the participation in class. Those who cannot attend should carefully study the handbook.

Examination Methods

For grading the students the instructor will orally evaluate the general knowledge of the subject metter (based on the handbook) and the analytical ability to understand the text we have studied in class. Participation and paper are also instruments of the evaluation.
