L-LIN/03 - FRENCH LITERATURE

Period

I semestre dal Oct 1, 2018 al Jan 12, 2019.

Learning outcomes

In the context of the theoretic and critical investigation of French literary studies provided in the two-year master’s degree program, this course aims at developing both historical and methodological competences.
As for the students attending the course in French literature for publishing and journalism, this course offers insights on the history of French publishing and on the relationship between literature or literary criticism and jouralism in contemporary France.
At the end of this course, students shall acquire knowledge in the field of the recent history of French literary criticism and related methods (LM37) and the history of publishing in France (LM19), along with the capacity of applying such knowledge, in an autonomous way and in French, to literary research as well as to teaching French literature.

Program

Writing shame

As Jean-Pierre Martin points out in his comparative Réflexions sur la littérature entitled La honte, the expression of shame is a major and complex theme in modern literature. A general survey, both theoretical (cultural history, philosophy, sociology, psychoanlaysis) and historical (from Racine to Rousseau and to the XXth cenutry: Bove, Camus, Sartre, Ionesco, Genet, Jouhandeau) concerning the French literary phenomenology and anthropology of shame will lead to a more extensive treatment of the two following topics:
. in the context of the debate about concentrationary literature (Perec on Antelme), a comparison of the testimony Moi Pierre Seel, déporté homosexuel (written in collaboration with Jean Le Bitoux, Paris, Calmann-Lévy, 1994) and Daniel Arsand’s recent novel Je suis en vie et tu ne m’entends pas (Arles, Actes Sud, 2016);
. the intertwining of socio-cultural and gender issues in works by Annie Eranux – from La honte (1997) to Mémoire de fille (2016) –, Pierre Bourdieu (Esquisse pour une auto-analyse, 2004), and Didier Eribon (Retour à Reims, 2009).
The main critical pesrpectives will be psychoanalytical and sociological, as well as drawn from cultural and gender studies. Students in Littérature française 2 LM Méthodologies critiques et interprétation du texte (LM37) shall furthermore concentrate on the recent history of French literary criticism, while students in Letteratura francese per l’editioria (LM19) shall concentrate on the relations of literature, journalism and publishing in France.

This course will be entirely held in French. Each student must present to the class two papers concerning one chosen work: one mid-term paper (general presentation) and one final paper (theoretical problematization and critical interpretation). The final oral exam will certify the overall knowledge of the program, as well as of the history of literary criticism (LM37) and the history of publishing in France (LM19).
A detailed program, a selection of texts and precise informations concerning individual further readings will be given at the beginning of and during the course.
Students unable to attend the course are requested to contact the teacher.

Stage e tirocini

Double degree

The University of Verona, through a network of agreements with foreign universities, offers international courses that enable students to gain a Double/Joint degree at the time of graduation. Indeed, students enrolled in a Double/Joint degree programme will be able to obtain both the degree of the University of Verona and the degree issued by the Partner University abroad - where they are expected to attend part of the programme -, in the time it normally takes to gain a common Master’s degree. The institutions concerned shall ensure that both degrees are recognised in the two countries.

Places on these programmes are limited, and admissions and any applicable grants are subject to applicants being selected in a specific Call for applications.

The latest Call for applications for Double/Joint Degrees at the University of Verona is available now!
