Learning outcomes
The course aims at providing the students with an introduction to the history of music and, more generally, to musicology, presenting some of the various aspects in which these disciplines are articulated. The course offers a historical, cultural and social reading of musical structures chosen among the great masterpieces. Direct audiences with related comments contribute greatly to making the approach to musical language more concrete and in-depth. At the end of the course the student will have acquired a certain capacity of orientation both in reading the texts of music historiography and in the mode of listening to music.
Program
The course deals with the following subjects:
1. First approach to Musicology and in particular to History of Music
2. Origin and evolution of such branch of instruction in Italy, In German Countries, in France and in Anglo-Saxon Area
3. Short introduction to Melodrama and the relation between words and music
4. Melodrama of Nineteenth Century, expression of the contemporary society
5. Relation of some Operas of Giuseppe Verdi with both French culture and society
6. Listening and investigating of significative passages of "Rigoletto" and "Travata" (a detailed list of listenings will be provided at the end of the course)

Examination Methods
Only oral examinations during which the students will demonstrate to know the subjects examinated during the course and to be in possession of reasonable ability of listening to music.
The same criteria are able for all the students, including those who cannot follow the corses personally.
