L-FIL-LET/09 - ROMANCE PHILOLOGY AND LINGUISTICS

Language

Italian

Period

Sem. 1B dal Nov 19, 2018 al Jan 12, 2019.

Learning outcomes

Instruction in Romance Philology, through reading and analysing literary texts in various romance languages, will allow students to acquire and develop awareness and knowledge in the areas of Philology, Historical Linguistics, and Literary Studies. Close reading and interpretation of literary texts, as well as important elements of critical, historical and cultural judgement, will also be improved. By the end of the course, students should demonstrate an ability to handle independently the different levels of analysis that will be applied to the texts studied as part of the syllabus. Students should furthermore demonstrate an awareness of the terminology of the discipline and present their ideas in the appropriate linguistic style.

Program

From October, 2nd 2018 there will be an optional supplementary course aimed at those who never attended classes in Romance Philology.

The course will focus on the analysis of narrative strategies in short medieval forms. Narrative short forms occupy a relevant place in the wide range of literary genres of Medieval vernacular literature. In particular, the "lais" will be taken into consideration. During the class the "lai of Narcissus" and the collection of the twelve "lais" by Marie de France (considered one of the highest literary products of Old French literature) will be taken into consideration and thouroughly analyzed.

Double Degree

The University of Verona, through a network of agreements with foreign universities, offers international courses that enable students to gain a Double/Joint degree at the time of graduation. Indeed, students enrolled in a Double/Joint degree programme will be able to obtain both the degree of the University of Verona and the degree issued by the Partner University abroad - where they are expected to attend part of the programme -, in the time it normally takes to gain a common Master’s degree. The institutions concerned shall ensure that both degrees are recognised in the two countries.

Places on these programmes are limited, and admissions and any applicable grants are subject to applicants being selected in a specific Call for applications.

The latest Call for applications for Double/Joint Degrees at the University of Verona is available now!
