SPS/07 - GENERAL SOCIOLOGY

Language

Italian

Period

II SEMESTRE dal Mar 4, 2019 al May 31, 2019.

Learning outcomes

Starting from a general overview of some of the main approaches and concepts used in sociology to understand the features and functions of society, the course will allow students to identify the social dimension of sport and physical activity by considering them both from internal and external observation points, namely as specific social phenomena and elements of society that are always related to other elements. Through in-depth examination of the concept of social capital, found in theoretical reflections in general sociology and also, more specifically, in the sociology of sport, the course will attempt to show the efficacy of the analysis of sport and physical activity as social phenomena. Additionally, the presentation of the concept of social capital will allow students to familiarize themselves with some social research techniques, in particular those for analysing social network structures, which are useful in the study of relational contexts in sport.
At the end of the taught course, the student must:
- know the basic concepts of sociology applied to sports science and the concept of social capital;
- be able to identify the social dimension of phenomena related to sport and physical activity and, in particular, analyse the presence of social capital in relational contexts (groups, associations, etc.);
- know how to assess the impact and social importance of motor activity and identify the connections between social resources and individual actions;
- be able to use the concepts studied in an appropriate manner both in general terms and with special regard to motor activity;
- know how to use the acquired skills to obtain a social view of phenomena related to sport and physical activity, and relational phenomena, using this distinctive feature to understand them.

Program

To achieve the learning outcomes, the syllabus will be structured as follows:

1. Introduction to the sociology of sport and physical activity.

2. Sociology as a science of society.

3. Research paradigms in sociology.

4. The main sociological theories used to explain and understand phenomena in the field of sport and physical activity.

5. Sport as a social institution.

6. Sport in the socialization process.

7. The relationship between sport and politics.

8. Sports organizations.

9. The concept of social capital.

10. The study of social capital.

The syllabus will be presented analytically in frontal lectures. All topics in the syllabus can be found in the reference books.
