Learning outcomes

On successful completion of this module, students should be able to describe and discuss the core aspects of German grammar and its characteristics in a comparative perspective

Program

Starting with the Felderanalyse we will introduce the phrase structure rules of the German language in the X'-Scheme with practical examples and exercises as homeworks; after this introduction, the most important syntactic phenomena like Extraposition, Topicalisation, passive formation and the role of Case will be discussed; the rest of the course is then dedicated to an indepth analysis of the rules and properties that determine the order of constituents in the Middle Field:
the following notions with discussed: theme-rheme, focus-background, marked and unmarked word order, normal intonation, focus projection and rules of prosodic domain formation;

Examination Methods

the exam consists in an discussion of 3-4 questions out of the following list:
