Learning outcomes
Teaching introduces the student to the understanding of health determinants, risk factors, both individual and collective prevention strategies and interventions aimed at promoting the safety of health professionals and users. It provides students with the main knowledge about epidemiology, clinical characteristics and transmission methods of major infectious diseases specifically related to the safety of dental hygienist and users with respect to infection prevention in the working environment. Finally, knowledge is provided concerning the biology of microorganisms (bacteria, viruses, mycetes and protozoa) and basic concepts regarding their role as agents of infectious diseases the oral microbiota. INFECTIOUS DISEASES MODULE Training objectives: Providing students with essential knowledge about epidemiology, clinical characteristics and how major infectious diseases are transmitted. EPIDEMIOLOGICAL METHODOLOGY AND APPLIED HYGIENE MODULE Training objectives: Teaching introduces the student to the understanding of health determinants, risk factors, both individual and collective prevention strategies and interventions aimed at promoting the safety of health professionals and users. It is also proposed to make people understand the causes, pathogenic mechanisms, and how to prevent and control infection diseases and major chronic-degenerative diseases as outcomes of lifestyles. The Course specifically aims to: • gain specific knowledge on the discipline of epidemiology; • Gain knowledge about how to transmit, the use of the main direct and indirect prophylaxis tools; • to gain specific knowledge about chronic-degenerative diseases and how to prevent them. CLINICAL MICROBIOLOGY MODULE Training objectives: The biology of microorganisms (bacteria, viruses, mycetes and protozoa) and basic concepts regarding their role as agents of infectious diseases. Nods to the mechanisms of action of the main antimicrobial drugs. The oral microbiota. Knowledge of the role of microorganisms in important infectious pathologies of the oral cavity: tooth decay and periodontal disease. INFECTION PREVENTION MODULE ASSOCIATED WITH ASSISTIVE PROCESSES Training objectives: Develop knowledge about the safety of operators and users in relation to the prevention of infections within dental clinics. WORK SAFETY AND RADIOPROTECTION MODULE Training objectives: The course aims to gain basic knowledge and understanding in terms of prevention, protection and promotion and management of health and safety in the workplace. Teaching introduces the student to the understanding of health determinants, risk factors, both individual and collective prevention strategies and interventions aimed at promoting the safety of health professionals and users. It is also proposed to make people understand the causes, pathogenic mechanisms, and how to prevent and control infection diseases. The student will also acquire, also through examples taken from the field, basic knowledge and understanding on the general principles of occupational medicine, risk assessment, health surveillance, fitness judgment, specific legislation, primary, secondary and tertiary prevention, with reference to different types of work risk (e.g. chemical, physical, biological, ergonomic, organisational and psychosocial, accident). Attention will be devoted to getting the student knowledge and understanding about the prerogatives and roles of the various figures and structures responsible for prevention in the workplace. To have the student acquire specific knowledge and awareness that in the profession of dental hygienist and dental practice there are, on the one hand, some occupational risks and potential adverse health effects and, on the other, various modes of primary, secondary and tertiary prevention.
Program
The program includes:
1) study of methods to ensure an effective physical and psychosocial environment for patient safety;
2) study of the practices of protection from physical, chemical and biological risks in the workplace and adopt precautions for the manual handling of loads;
3) study of the main agents responsible for infectious diseases, methods of transmission of the same and clinical manifestations;
4) study of the strategies to be adopted to prevent the infectious risk in health and community settings;
5) study of management and preventive and assistance interventions aimed at assisted persons, family and community oriented towards the promotion of health and safety.

Examination Methods
The exam consists in making the 5 different modules (Clinical Microbiology, Epidemiological Methodology and Applied Hygiene, Safety in the Workplace and Radiation Protection, Prevention of Infections Associated with Care Processes, Infectious Diseases) in written form according to the indications present in the different modules of teaching. The exam is considered to be taken only if a positive mark is given in all modules (minimum 18/30). The final grade will derive from the weighted average of the marks obtained by the various modules
