Learning outcomes
The Teaching provides the tools for comprehension and the clinical approach to the main neoplastic diseases in cancer patients, illustrates the basic elements and quality controls of Radiotherapy equipment as well as the techniques of Radiotherapy treatment. EQUIPMENT AND QUALITY CONTROL IN RADIOTHERAPY To provide the basic elements on the equipment and its use in Radiotherapy with reference to quality controls and Technician operative role. ONCOLOGY Providing the tools for the comprehension and the approach of the main medical neoplastic diseases in cancer patient. RADIOTHERAPY To provide information on technological solutions used in Radiation Oncology as well as on specific programs of quality assurance. RADIOTHERAPY TECHNIQUES The student, at the end of the study path, must be able to: - describe the characteristics of different ionizing radiations used for tumors's therapy (gamma rays, X rays, adrons) and their interactions with the biological tissues - describe LET (Linear Energy Transfer) and RBE (Relative Biological Effectiveness) of the different ionizing radiations - describe the concepts of therapeutic ratio (TCP\NTCP) and therapeutic window in radiotherapy - describe the operation of a linear accelerator for radiotherapy (LINAC) and its components - describe the beam delivery techniques of a LINAC with MLC (multi leaf collimator), included static and arc techniques - describe the operation and the beam delivery system of a Tomotherapy equipment - describe the techniques of set-up and centering of the oncologic patient - describe the operation of a TPS (Treatment Planning System) and the advanced techniques of planning nowadays used - decribe set-up and IGRT during treatment - describe, in general, the operation of a proton therapy equipment and the techniques of beam delivery with protons used nowadays
