Learning outcomes
The aim of the course is to train students about the 'survival' of the classic beyond the ancient world, investigating some significant aspects of the tradition and reception of Greek and Latin literature in the post-classical age.
Program
The course aims to introduce students to the History of the Classical Tradition through the discipline’s basic conceptual and theoretical premises (concepts of ‘tradition’, ‘classical reception’, etc.) . The course is divided into two modules:
1) A first introductory module (12 hours) of a methodological nature with illustrative analysis of some case studies on the fortune of characters and motifs of the classical tradition.
2) The second monographic module (24 hours) will examine some of the most significant episodes, mainly in the literary field, of the fortune of the Oedipus myth from the tragedy "Oedipus the king" by the Athenian dramatist Sophocles to the modern and contemporary ages.
In addition to the texts found in the box underneath (‘Reference books’), further bibliography will be provided or suggested in class.
Students unable to attend classes will be provided a few additional texts and are expected to contact the lecturer during the weekly consultation times.
Prerequisites: a basic knowledge of the classical languages is desirable, but not necessary

Examination Methods
The examination will take place remotely, via Zoom, and will be conducted orally. It will aim to ascertain the students’ knowledge on both the course contents and the reference texts, also in accordance with the indications given throughout the course. Since the course is divided into two modules, each candidate will have to sit two oral exams, the first of which will take place a day apart from the second.
The first exam will focus on the contents of module B (Professor Ugolini), while the second one on the contents of module A (Professor Lupi). It is necessary that the students sit both exams during the same session, and therefore to register for both at the same time. Close to the exam date, students will receive a Zoom link allowing them to access the exam room on Zoom; further practical information on the exam will also be provided.
