Learning outcomes

The course aims to provide a general knowledge of History of Illuminated Books and in particular a knowledge of some contexts of production of Illuminated Books between the Middle Age and the Renaissance.
Students will deal vith issues such as patronage, production and function of illuminated books, text-image relationship and correlation between Illumination and other Figurative Arts.
Students will also deal with examine different types of books and various illustrative systems, specially in liturgical context, coming to recognize and describe the elements of decoration, using the specialized terminolgy of the discipline.

History of Illuminated Books: an Introduction.
The Role of Illustration of Books in the context of Medieval and Renaissance art.
Techniques and Methods of work of Illuminators.
Terminology applied to the elements, styles and forms of Illumination.
Illumination in Liturgical Books.
Outlines of History of Illumination:
Late Antique and Early Christian Manuscripts.
Celtic, Anglo Saxon and Merovingian Manuscripts.
Romanesque Illuminated Manuscripts in Italy:
The scriptorium of Montecassino at the time of Desiderio Abbot
Exultet and Atlantic Bibles.
Verona: Illumination in XIV century.
The Double Series of Choir Books for the Cathedral.
Lesson or Visit to one Library to examine directly some Illuminated Manuscripts and Incunabula preserved there.
