Learning outcomes

The aim of the course is to provide students with historiographic tools and skills to understand the history of Latin America in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries and to analyze the specific problems of the continent.

Program

The course program is organized in three parts.
The first is a general presentation of Latin America from a geographical, economic and social perspective. These first lessons will also address the analysis of the main concepts used in the course, including globalization, late and late late industrialization, intermediate development, and convergence and divergence.
The second presents an overview of the economic history of Latin America between 1870 and 2015: the main stages of this history will be examined (export-led growth, state-led industrialization, pro-market reforms) and the overall performance of the countries in the different periods. For each of the periods examined, some representative national cases will be studied in depth (in particular Mexico, Brazil, Argentina and Chile), articulating the analysis of economic processes with that of the institutional and political contexts that constituted the framework.
Finally, starting from the concrete historical experience, the course will address on the one hand the debates on the causes of the limits of Latin American development and on the other the comparison with the success of other countries, articulating history and theory, in a comparative perspective .
