Learning outcomes
The course aims to improve the knowledge of the of the history of art in the Renaissance and Barock periods. The students will increase their critical skills, also for the purpose of an individual research activity.
Program
On the occasion of the designation of Parma as 'Capitale italiana della cultura' for the two-year period 2020-2021, the course will address the study of some lesser-known aspects of the art history of the Emilian city in the 15th and 16th centuries, i.e. before and after a fundamental turning point: the arrival in Parma of Antonio Allegri, Correggio, in 1518. This event transforms a peripheral center (as Parma had been for centuries) into one of the artistic capitals of Italy.
The lessons will focus mainly on:
a) the rich but little known late Gothic painting of the first half of the fifteenth century (especially four cycles of frescoes in the Cathedral);
b) the multiplicity of orientations of the second part of the century (towards Cremona and Lombardy, but above all towards Venice, with interesting painters such as Filippo Mazzola, the father of Parmigianino, or Cristoforo Caselli;
c) the testimonies of sculpture in Parma between the 15th and 16th centuries;
d) the patronage of the great female Benedictine monasteries in the city, in particular that of San Paolo (where Correggio made his debut with the Chamber of the Abbess Giovanna Piacenza).
The course will end with a two-day trip to Parma, where we will visit the Cathedral, the Baptistery, the National Gallery, the Camera di San Paolo.
