Learning outcomes

At the end of the course students are expected to: - acquire the epistemological foundations of language teaching and of the historic development of language teaching methodology - be able to put into relationship the theory and the implications for teaching practice, to analyze teaching materials, to examine a situation in order to set a teaching intervention and work out relevant exercises and activities, calibrated on learners’ specific needs; - develop critical judgments on the effectiveness and adequacy of teaching interventions with respect to the subjects to whom they are addressed.

Program

The first part of the course will focus on the illustration of the cognitive and psycholinguistic mechanisms underlying the acquisition of second languages, with particular reference to individual variables, such as age of acquisition, cross-linguistic interference, attitude, motivation and emotional factors. The most recent and accredited theories developed in the context of the Second Language Acquisition will therefore be presented in a critical manner, which will be discussed during classes emphasizing both positive and problematic aspects.
In the second part of the course, these theoretical aspects will be transposed into practice, analyzing the various teaching techniques that can be used for teaching languages in different contexts. Finally, aspects related to the acquisition of languages in atypical contexts will be taken into consideration, as in the presence of specific language and learning disabilities (dyslexia) that may require more specific and appropriate lines of intervention.

The program will be the same for attending and non attending students. Attending and non attending students are invited to read the detailed program, the slides of the lectures and further materials published on the e-learning page of the course.

Examination Methods

The exam will verify the theoretical and practical skills acquired by the students during the course.
It will consist of a written test lasting 1:30 hours and will include open and multiple-choice questions on the theoretical part, as well as discussion of practical cases on the basis of what discussed in class during the lessons. The questions will therefore focus on all the topics of the program, both those dealt with in the classroom during the lessons and which will be made available on the e-learning platform, and those prepared independently by the students on the texts indicated.
The exam will be the same for attending and non attending students.

The tests will be evaluated according to the following criteria:
- substantial correctness of the answers and completeness of the contents;
- expressive clarity, argumentative ability and knowledge of the specific language of the subject.

Students with disabilities or specific learning disorders (SLD), who intend to request the adaptation of the exam, must follow the instructions given HERE
