Learning outcomes

The course is designed to provide the student with: - a knowledge of critical issues in translation theories and studies (methods, criticism, description vs. prescription, etc.), with a particular emphasis on Italian theories of translation in XXth Century - a language (vocabulary) and discourse (manner) for “talking” about translation - critical skills to analyze and compare different interlinguistic translations of a literary source text

Program

This course will introduce students to key concepts and issues in translation studies, from both a theoretical and applied perspective.
More specifically, the course will, on the one hand, discuss the main theoretical approaches to translation; on the other hand, students will reflect on the main problems posed by translation.
Particular attention will be dedicated to some of the linguistic aspects which may be relevant to translation practice (such as, e.g., word order, collocations, and idioms). Students will also reflect on the specificities presented by different text types and different language varieties (diatopic, diastratic, diaphasic and diamesic variation).


The syllabus is the same for attending and non-attending students. Students are invited to enrol in the Moodle course, where lecture materials and announcements will be posted.

Examination Methods

The examination consists of a written test comprising open and multiple-choice questions, and practical exercises. The questions will cover all the topics of the syllabus, both those discussed in class and those prepared independently by the students on the indicated texts.
The test will evaluate:
• students’ knowledge of the key concepts and main theories of translation (mainly assessed through open and multiple-choice questions)
• students’ ability to apply the theoretical knowledge learnt during the course to the analysis of different types of interlingual translations (mainly assessed through practical exercises).
• students’ ability to discuss critically the main theoretical approaches presented during the course and to reflect on and recognise the main problems posed by translation (mainly assessed through open questions).

Evaluation criteria are the following:
-correctness and completeness of answers;
- possession of adequate analytical skills;
- clarity of expression and knowledge of the specific language of the discipline.
