L-FIL-LET/14 - CRITICAL COMPARATIVE LITERATURE
Period
1 A dal Sep 27, 2021 al Nov 6, 2021.
Learning outcomes
Teaching comparative literature aims at transmitting to the students crucial conceptual intruments and modes of thoughts concerning some important literary themes current in the Western World. By the end of the course the student will master notions and critical methodologies used by the professor in class.
Program
Title: "Mythomania"
The course aims to pursue two purposes: on the one hand, to rediscover figures, themes, episodes, meanings and symbols of the classical Greek myth; on the other hand, to critically retrace, from a comparative point of view, some ancient or contemporary works that find inspiration in Greek myth, to verify the persistence of the fascination of mythology in Western culture for two millennia. In this sense, will be analyzed texts by Sophocles and Virgil; Ovid and Poliziano; Anouilh and Brecht; Rilke and Cocteau; Gore Vidal and Luigi Santucci; Giraudoux and Dürrenmatt; Cesare Pavese, Margaret Atwood and Madeline Miller; Anne Carson and Louise Glück. The illustration of classical myths will also be carried out through examples taken from the visual arts (paintings, sculptures, frescoes, etc.) as well as from cinema and the media in general.

Examination Methods
During the exam (which entitles you to 6 credits) the knowledge of the topics and the analytical skills developed by the student will be ascertained.
The interview that will form the core of the exam will aim to verify:
- the depth and breadth of the knowledge acquired
- the ownership of language and the mastery of adequate technical terminology
- the ability to analytically compare styles, texts, themes, authors, periods, literary genres
- analytical and argumentative ability.
In particular, the teacher will appreciate a critical, personal and possibly original analysis of the topics covered, not a tired repetition. Of the texts, for example, it will be more interesting to highlight the peculiarities and the literary value compared to the narration of the plot, which will be taken for granted.
The teacher will try to respond quickly to messages from Monday to Friday; the reception time is set for Thursday, from 4 and 3 pm, by appointment via email; the studio is on the second floor of Polo Zanotto (room 2.23).
As regards the program for NON-ATTENDING STUDENTS (therefore those who have not attended classroom lessons, but only in recorded form), in addition to the integral study of volumes 1 and 2 (therefore Bettini and Ieranò), also a reading in plus, at your choice, from those indicated in sections 3, 4, 5, 6, 7

Double Degree
The University of Verona, through a network of agreements with foreign universities, offers international courses that enable students to gain a Double/Joint degree at the time of graduation. Indeed, students enrolled in a Double/Joint degree programme will be able to obtain both the degree of the University of Verona and the degree issued by the Partner University abroad - where they are expected to attend part of the programme -, in the time it normally takes to gain a common Master’s degree. The institutions concerned shall ensure that both degrees are recognised in the two countries.
Places on these programmes are limited, and admissions and any applicable grants are subject to applicants being selected in a specific Call for applications.
The latest Call for applications for Double/Joint Degrees at the University of Verona is available now!
