Learning outcomes

Requirement for participation in the Laboratory: attendance of at least 80% of the lessons of ‘Observing child behavior: Theories and techniques’.

The Laboratory offers the opportunity to experiment and deepen the theoretical and instrumental knowledge acquired during the lessons of ‘Observing child behavior: Theories and techniques’. In particular, the students will be assisted in developing an observation project ̶ from the definition of the main aim to the processing of the collected data ̶ spendable in an educational context of the participants' interest (e.g., Nursery school, services for infants/children and their families, residential communities for minors, etc.).

Program

The lab activities are structured in both plenary sessions and small group sessions.

The FIRST PLENARY SESSIONS are aimed to develop and train basic/”foundational” research skills, which are functional to identify foundational references to develop the observation project, such as:
- skills to use online databases
- skills to read scientific papers.

The SMALL GROUP SESSIONS are aimed to elaborate an observation project (one project each group) to be used in a specific educational context (e.g., Nursery school, services for infants/children and their families, residential communities for minors, etc., according to the participants’ interest). In particular, the small group sessions will be focused on the different steps to design the observation project:
- to define the research aim
- to identify participants and procedure
- to choose the most adequate observational techniques
- to adapt and/or build the observational instruments
- to choose the modalities of recording, transcribing, and coding data
- to choose a useful data analysis
- to identify effective ways to evaluate the implementation of the project.

The work in progress within the different groups will be constantly supervised by lab tutors, and reported and discussed in INTERMEDIATE AND FINAL PLENARY SESSIONS.

Examination Methods

At the end of the Lab, there is no examination, but only a plenary session for a critical discussion of the research projects developed by each working group. However, the lab activities will support the preparation of the examination of Theories and Tecniques of Child Behavior Observation.
