Academic calendar
The academic calendar shows the deadlines and scheduled events that are relevant to students, teaching and technical-administrative staff of the University. Public holidays and University closures are also indicated. The academic year normally begins on 1 October each year and ends on 30 September of the following year.

Learning objectives
The course is an introduction to Germanic Philology and it aims at providing basic knowledge on multi-disciplinary topics such as codicology, paleography, textual criticism, cultural history, and historical linguistics characterizing the discipline (including basic knowledge for the digital treatment of texts and manuscripts). Expected Outcomes At the end of the course the student will have to prove: - to have acquired basic knowledge of methodologies and cultural contents which are necessary to analyse and interpret the literary traditions of Germanic areas; - to have acquired proficiency in the specialized vocabulary related to every field of the discipline; - to have acquired basic knowledge of the different specialized fields of Germanic Philology, mainly focussing on medieval history of books (also treated with the support of Digital Humanities tools and methodologies) according to the objective of the study programme.
Prerequisites and basic notions
Knowledge of a modern Germanic language (English, German or a Scandinavian language) is advisable.
Program
The course will offer the basics for the study of the interdisciplinary aspects of Germanic Philology, dealing with old Germanic cultures (in the Roman epoch and the Middle Ages), comparative linguistics of the Germanic languages, manuscript studies (palaeography, codicology, book history) and a survey of textual criticism and the editions of texts of vernacular Germanic traditions.
The course will be divided into three modules.
The FIRST MODULE represents the general introduction to the course. It will treat the common features of old Germanic cultures, that is
1. Comparative analysis of the Germanic languages (compared to other Indo-European languages and to each other).
2. Features of the pre-literate Germanic culture (through the witnesses of classical authors and of the archaeology), that is society and law, religious beliefs, poetic traditions.
3. Conversion to Christianity and the development of written linguistic variants.
In the SECOND MODULE, the manuscript culture in written Old Germanic variants (Biblical Gothic, Old/Middle English, Old/Middle High German, Old Icelandic) will be treated, through relevant instances of manuscript books from these areas. The tenets of ecdotics (comparative-genealogical method vs material philology) will also be surveyed.
The THIRD MODULE will consist of the philological interpretation of a choice of texts in the Germanic vernacular languages, of which will be considered

3. Contents
4. Critical editions and the related methodologies.
The selected texts are:
1. Old English – Deor (ms: Exeter Book)
2. Old Icelandic – The Hel-ride of Brunhild in the Poetic Edda (mss: Codex Regius, Flateyjarbók).
Bibliography
Didactic methods
As indicated by the University for the academic year 2022/2023, the course will be in presence. Any changes will be announced before the start of the course on the instructor's web page and on the Moodle platform, to which everyone is required to sign up. The course materials for attending students consist of the selected bibliography in Leganto, the lectures and other materials that will be available on Moodle. The program for non-attending students must be agreed in advance with the instructor. Non-attending students are supposed to contact the instructor via email (please use your institutional address @studenti.univr.it). The selected bibliography in Leganto will be further detailed during the course.
Learning assessment procedures
There will be an oral exam following the official schedule published by the University. For attending students there will be a pre-call that will be announced during the course. For non-attending students the exam will be oral and will follow the same criteria.
Evaluation criteria
The exam aims both to assess the knowledge acquired during the course and the ability to address the topics and establish connections among them. The evaluation will also concern the correct presentation as well as the appropriate use of the technical language of philology.
Criteria for the composition of the final grade
The final assessment is expressed out of 30/30 (min. 18/30) and it is to be understood as an overall evaluation of the achieved results.

- competenze linguistiche (diverse o ulteriori) rispetto a quelle obbligatorie
- tirocini o stage
- TALC (competenze trasversali).

Il numero di CFU D va calcolato complessivamente sull’intero triennio/biennio e non è legato all'annualità.
CFU F
I CFU F sono solitamente relativi ad abilità informatiche, competenze linguistiche, stage e tirocini e ulteriori attività formative accreditate in questa tipologia dal Collegio Didattico.
Nel corso di laurea in Lingue e letterature per l’editoria e i media digitali sono previste le seguenti tipologie:
- 3 CFU per terza lingua (livello B1)
- 6 CFU per tirocinio obbligatorio
- 3 CFU per informatica (curriculum Editoria)
- 9 CFU per laboratori (curriculum Digital Humanities).
Le competenze informatiche possono essere acquisite attraverso:
- il superamento della prova pratica presso le aule informatiche di Ateneo,
- la frequenza dei corsi attivati da scuole e centri accreditati dall’AICA (Associazione Italiana per l’Informatica e il Calcolo Automatico) o riconosciuti dalla Provincia e dalla Regione e superamento della relativa prova finale. Le domande per il riconoscimento delle competenze informatiche acquisite precedentemente vengono esaminate dalla Commissione per il riconoscimento delle Competenze Informatiche.Le attività di tirocinio sono finalizzate a far acquisire allo studente una conoscenza diretta nel settore editoriale e delle Digital Humanities nonché abilità specifiche d’interesse professionale (revisione bozze, grafica editoriale, costruzione di pagine web, archivi digitali etc.).

Stage e tirocini
Nel piano didattico della laurea triennale in Lingue e letterature per l’editoria e i media digitali (L11 ED-DH) è previsto un tirocinio/stage obbligatorio (CFU 6).
Le attività di stage sono finalizzate a far acquisire allo studente una conoscenza diretta in settori di particolare interesse per l’inserimento nel mondo del lavoro e per l’acquisizione di abilità professionali specifiche.
Le attività di stage sono svolte sotto la diretta responsabilità di un singolo docente presso studi professionali, enti della pubblica amministrazione, aziende accreditate dall’Ateneo veronese.
I crediti maturati in seguito ad attività di stage saranno attribuiti secondo quanto disposto nel dettaglio dal “Regolamento d’Ateneo per il riconoscimento dei crediti maturati negli stage universitari” vigente.
