Learning outcomes

On successful completion of this module, students will be able to: - illustrate and exemplify important diachronic processes in phonology, morphology and syntax; - explain language change in terms of the effects of general linguistic principles; - demonstrate knowledge with respect to the edition of medieval texts; - analyze simple texts of the main genres in medieval German with respect to their phonological, morphological, syntactic and lexical properties, translate them and interpret them; - illustrate the historicity of all expressions of human culture, by means of the reflection about language change and history of linguistics; - elaborate topics autonomously and present results in oral and/or written form (give a talk; write a paper); - demonstrate good command of important resources in historical linguistics.

Examination Methods

Students who regularly attend classes: oral presentation ("Referat": 40% of final grade), active participation and exercises during classes (10%), oral exam (50% of final grade).
- "Referat": presentation of a work of German medieval literature with respect to form, content and linguistic features;
- oral examination: description and explanation of linguistic features and of language-change processes in all subdisciplines of linguistics, competence in the usage of the digital tools.
Students who do not regularly attend classes: term paper (50%) and oral examination (50% of final grade):
- term paper: presentation of a work of German medieval literature with respect to form, content and linguistic features. Please contact the professor before the end of the classes in order to define the work.
- oral examination: description and explanation of linguistic features and of language-change processes in all subdisciplines of linguistics, competence in the usage of the digital tools.
