Learning objectives
The course requires the students to achieve the following educational goals:
• Learning the historical development of neurophysiology, both in relation to the acquisition of specific pieces of knowledge on the nervous system and in relation to the derived theoretical conception of the motor, sensory and cognitive processes;
• Relating the theoretical knowledge acquired in the study of physiology to the experimental approaches that allowed its acquisition, highlighting how different approaches might intrinsically limit knowledge development itself;
• Understanding how the scientific development of a discipline unfolds between a gradual accumulation of new knowledge and some great leaps forward, marked by revolutionary discoveries, and how the history of a discipline might be marked both by episodes of serendipity and by the intuition of great scholars;
• Exploring state-of-the-art knowledge in neurophysiology and understanding what the big unresolved questions may be today in this field.
Prerequisites and basic notions
None.
